The Most Powerful Evangel - Worship!

I read this amazing thing on worship this morning and i had to share it. Worshippers and worship leaders out there grab a hold of this if not for your ministry for yourself.

Years ago, I read a definition of worship that to this day rings with clear and magnificent terms.(1) The definition comes from the famed archbishop William Temple: "Worship is the submission of all of our nature to God. It is the quickening of the conscience by his holiness; the nourishment of mind with his truth; the purifying of imagination by his beauty; the opening of the heart to his love; the surrender of will to his purpose—all this gathered up in adoration, the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable."

The more I have thought of that definition, the more I am convinced that if worship is practiced with integrity in the community of God's people, potentially, worship may be the most powerful evangel for this postmodern culture of ours. It is imperative in planning the worship services that church leaders give careful attention to every element and make sure that the worship retains both integrity and purpose. People come to church generally "beaten down" by the world of deceit, distraction, and demand. There is an extraction of emotional and spiritual energy that brings them on "empty" into the community. The church's task is to so prepare during the week that it is collectively the instrument of replenishment and fresh energy of soul. Even being in the presence of fellow believers in worship is a restorer of spiritual hope. We so underestimate the power of a people in one mind and with one commitment. Even a prayer can so touch a hungry heart that it can rescue a sliding foot in a treacherous time.

A few years ago, two or three of my colleagues and I were in a country dominated for decades by Marxism. Before we began our meetings, we were invited to a dinner hosted by some common friends, all of whom were skeptics and, for all practical purposes, atheists. The evening was full of questions, posed principally by a notable theoretical physicist in the country. There were also others who represented different elements of power within that society. As the night wore on, we got the feeling that the questions had gone on long enough and that we were possibly going in circles.

At that point, I asked if we could have a word of prayer with them, for them, and for the country before we bade them good-bye. There was a silence of consternation, an obvious hesitancy, and then one said, "Of course." We did just that—we prayed. In this large dining room of historic import to them, with all the memories of secular power plastered within those walls, the prayer brought a sobering silence that we were all in the presence of someone greater than us. When we finished, every eye was moist and nothing was said. They hugged us and thanked us, with emotion written all over their faces. The next day when we met them, one of them said to me, "We did not go back to our rooms last night till it was early morning. In fact, I stayed in my hotel lobby most of the night talking further. Then I went back to my room and gave my life to Jesus Christ."

I firmly believe that it was the prayer that gave them a hint of the taste of what worship is all about. Their hearts had never experienced it.

Over the years I have discovered that praying with people can sometimes do more for them than preaching to them. Prayer draws the heart away from one's own dependence to leaning on the sovereign God. The burden is often lifted instantly. Prayer is only one aspect of worship, but one that is greatly neglected in the face of people who would be shocked to hear what prayer sounds like when the one praying knows how to touch the heart of God. To a person in need, pat answers don't change the mind; prayer does.

New Switchfoot Album - Hello Hurricane

Dirt Conference - Main Session (Rick Bezet)

Why are you not in church any longer? - Barna institute Survey

What's interesting is that none of the answers are theological.

1.) We don't like the music

- Hymns were sounds out of the bars, they where cutting edge several years ago, so be cutting edge with your Praise &
Worship.

- Music we like is not what it's about, its about the ones who aren't here yet.

2.) Kids don't like the church

3.) Sermons are boring and irrelevant.
- Relevant, Humor, transparency, and inspiration should be in every sermon for todays culture.

4.) They want my money

5.) The People are weird, hypocritical, and I don't feel welcome

* Artistic people generally feel unwelcome at churches.

But remember for us:

1.) Not to lose the confidence of your call.

Heb 4:16

- Don't have backwards vision.
If you think God has kicked you out then its gonna be hard to be creative in that place.

- Gods voice is a whisper cause you have to be in close proximity to hear him.

2.) Keep confidence in our dreams.
- There comes a time when u can broadcast your dream to the world, but God wants you to talk to him about it always.

Story of Blind Bartimaus
Jesus asked him what he wants, even though Jesus knew Bartimaus wanted to see, God wants to hear us say what our dream is.

Types of creatives God's wants to reach:

1.) Ones who lost there dream.

2.) Ones who are dreaming the wrong dream.

** Samson - cost him a lot for being in the wrong dream, in the wrong place, with the wrong people.

3.) Ones who are doing the God dream
- Gods dream is always about souls.

Dirt is not very expensive unless its in the right place. Location of dirt can depict its value. New York cost more than Arkansas, and when our location is close to God we then can find more value in ourselves and the things we are doing and apart of.

"Humility is not thinking less of yourself its thinking more of other people."

We all want to be at a place, a church, a leader where other people can come and dream big with others and dream with God.

This Coming Week!

Kristin and I will be leaving tomorrow to head to a very cool conference called Dirt! Looking forward to learning, sharing, growing in the days to come and get some creative juices flowing with some of the most creative brains out there. Including my wife!

Hope to see you there, if not check out www.dirtconference.com for details of what the conference is all about.

Gotta say I love to give other people opportunity to lead Praise & Worship. I love to hear the comments, "why aren't you on stage this weekend?" "Who is that leading today... They're good" "Do you have the weekend off?"

I love those comments cause it gives me the opportunity to share the heart of Bayside of how we want to grow people in there gifts and use them in there "10." Garrett & Kristen and the team where definitely in their "10" this weekend! When you give other people opportunity and you step out of the way. Its grows your team and it grows you as the leader. To let go shows great leadership, something that I continue to learn. My first instinct would be just to do it all, but God will bring you people to make what you do so much better. Try and step out of the way and see if I'm lying or not.

Dirt Conference 2009

Man so pumped about Dirt! Who knew that things like Dirt would make me excited!

On Nov. 10th & 11th, just a month away, Kristin and I will be speaking at the Dirt Conference - It's a creative conference for churches.

Dirt is a non-typical creative church conference held at New Life Church in Little Rock, Arkansas. A conference that you can pull back the curtain and see what you can do with where your at right now as a church?

Gaining attainable goals and the tools and personal connections to get whatever creative idea God gives you and see it accomplished.

Dirt. Something from nothing.

For me what i'm most excited about is the speakers. They have some ridiculous speakers this year including my wife and my brother in law, and one of Bayside's very own Colt Sammons.

Here's there bio's from the site, pretty funny:

Kristin Becnel
Creative and coordination combined in one person - and Bayside Community Church looks amazing because of it.

Brad Duplechain - My Brother In-law
Softball fanatic, destroyer of all things creative, and communications guru for Healing Place Church.

Colt Sammons
Colt can create environments with whatever, whenever and whoever. He can also walk a 12 foot ladder forward and backwards over 23 feet while singing "Don't You Want Me Baby".

This weekend was cool to get my sister to lead praise & worship. I am so proud to call her my sister. I told her several months ago I wanted her to lead and she has always been ready, willing, and able to use the gift that God has given her. She is actually one of the main reasons I'm doing what I'm doing today, working at Bayside. She was singing way before I was and I think it was through her Passion of singing that inspired me. Love ya Sis.

Oh and I can't forget my boy Garrett. The Canadian in Bradenton! Garrett works with me in the Worship Ministry here at Bayside. He has such an awesome heart for God and is one to also always challenge me. This guy can dream big dreams for God, and I believe God's brought him here to Bayside to see some of those dreams come true. This weekend was one of them to.

As both of these amazing team members have challenged me in my life to get to where I am today, I know Bayside that they did that for you as well.

This week was a smoking set. Ken Walker did a great job leading Beauty of the Lord and an amazing job by my sis Kristen and Aimmee leading Hosanna.

Commitment song we picked as Pastor Randy was talking on Relationships with God an relationships with each other. Relationships is generally a hard topic to find a good commitment song on unless it's "Friends are Friends forever" but I just can't bring myself to ever singing that song. haha but I love the line in this commitment song that says, "Come and lay your burdens down before the friend who's faithful, before the one who is able."

Hillsong Encounter Notes

::Phil Dooley:: - Tear Down The Walls
Matthew 26:7 (NIV)

We put up walls against other churches which keeps us from being united.

Then we even put up walls so some people can't even come in our churches.

4 different walls we need to tear down
1.) The Wall of Self
- it can't just be all about me

Stop worring about "me" and start worring about other people, the people who Jesus worries about.

2.) The Wall of Shame & Guilt
- people don't come to our churches because they don't feel like they belong. Because all they sense is a feeling of guilt & shame that they could never live up to.

John 3:17 - He didn't come to condem

The house of God is a house of grace no matter what they've done wrong God can make right with God's grace.

3.) The Wall of Judgement
What u might judge actually might be beautiful to Jesus!

Let's choose not on judging others but on focusing on Jesus!

4.) The Wall of Indifference
A consumer world that forces its way into the church world:
-worship is not gonna be that good tonight
-they didn't do my favorite song

When u make a choice in your life that your not gonna be indifferent anylonger and actually stop and do something, you will start living a life like Jesus, that is excediantly abundantly above all we could as or imagine according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be the Glory in the church, and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations!

The whole team really was phenomenal. I'm so proud of them. Proud that our church has a worship team who really knows how to worship. So now to the set list this weekend. This weekend we had a great guest speaker with us Pastor Rick Bezet, he was speaking on "to be in the world but not of the world." So I knew that this weekend we needed to bring down some walls that people had up in there lives. To show them the benefit of living in Christ not just seeing Him as an acquaintance. So here's our song set to try and accomplish this goal of breaking down walls and challenging people to live for Christ.

Worship Set List - 7/18-19/09

Salvation Is Here
When I think about this song in a congregational setting i think about the Unchurched, Uncommited, Undecided singing 'Salvation Is Here.' I just have this picture of God just opening up the hearts of everyone in the church ready to be changed forever. Breaking down some walls with 3 powerful Words 'Salvation Is Here.'

My Future Decided
Again another song with wall breaking words to say out loud what Jeremiah 29:11 says, "'For I have plans for you' says the Lord, plans to prosper and not to harm me, a future and a hope for me."
For the unchurched, uncommited, undecided to say this! Wow. A lot of times for me I find that this is a very common question in a church like ours. 'Why am I here?' and people want to know this, they would love to sense a fulfillment of accomplishing what God has them on this earth to do.

Mighty to Save
"Savior He can move the mountains. My God is mighty to save, He is mighty to save. Forever Author of Salvation, He rose and conquered the grave, Jesus conquered the grave."
To be in this world but not of this world, and we can do that when we keep our eyes on the one who is Mighty to Save us from anything we face day to day.

You Deserve
Another Praise song to bring down the walls to receive the word God has for us. I love this bridge in this song: "I can't imagine a life without You, without You, cause it's all for You, yes it's all for You God" again living for God to be in this world but not of it.

Commitment Song:
Rescue
And finally to drive the point home..."this world has nothing for me, I will follow you"

My prayer is that people left this place with there eyes on Jesus and not on themselves and that they start to live for Him, through Him, and in Him. Because it's there where they will find true purpose in life, and true fulfillment. Break down the walls in our lives God that we make do what you need us and are calling us to do.

New Dave Matthew's Album - My Most Recent Fav

I wanted to share this with everyone cause this album is so good. Probably one of the best 'sounding' records that has come out. Love the new producer, and I love that Tim Reynolds is on this killing it.

God's Plans Not Ours!

This is some notes I took from our staff meeting this morning and a timely word from Pastor Randy so I decided to share.

------------------------------------------------------------

Prov 16:9
"In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps."

** God doesn't reveal detail plans but simply gives us next step plans that stretch us.**

If you are a planner sometimes this is tough to grasp ahold of, to let God just give us the next step and not the whole picture, it sometimes gets us to a place we just would rather control it, cause we want all the steps all at the same time, and God just doesn't work like that unfortunately.

Think about when you get driving directions somewhere, it becomes overwhelming if you get all the steps at one time. For me I can only handle one at a time and for some of you, you may be able to handle more, but still you can't have them all at once cause you'd get lost. You'd take a Left where you would suppose to go Right and head South instead of turning North and in the process doing a lot of backtracking.

So Why does god reveal next steps, rather than the whole picture:

1.) God doesn't need your help. HaHa

If He gave you it all at one time, you would try to skip steps and mess the whole thing up.

     God just wants your obedience!

God only gives you the next step to stretch you! He's the one who determines my steps not me.

2.) If God showed us all the details we'd probably never go.

Think about a trip or an experience in your life where now you can say 'its been great'  but along the way its been tough or maybe dangerous even, based on the experience your thinking about.  And If you would have known you'd go through some heartache or even some danger...would you have still done it or gone through with it? Probably not because you'd try to keep you or your family out of harms way!
Even though now you can look back through that experience and see the growth or fun you had.

Just remember this:
"Where there is stretching there is blessing" - Mike Haman (my old youth pastor)

Worship Set List - 7/4-5/09

This was our weekend set list and I wanted to elaborate on it to let you know what I was thinking about in putting this set list together. It was 4th of July weekend, so I did take into account people remembering, hearing, saying the word "Freedom" because of the Holiday. And what I wanted them to grab ahold of was that true freedom comes from God. So we did these songs with mention to Freedom in them.

Such as:

My Future Decided - Hillsong

In this song there is what I call a battle cry that says,
"unashamed, unafraid lord we know who we are"
we are your people and we won't be silent
unified here us cry at the top of our lungs
You are our God and we will not be shaken

I see this battle cry of praise as something you would say in battle, and maybe even a battle for freedom.

Your Name High - Hillsong

this song says, "Upon that cross you gave yourself for us, carried into your freedom."
Again singing freedom over our lives.

This is our God - Hillsong

"freely You gave it all for us" freedom comes with a price and that price for us is Jesus...enough said.

Prodigal (Chorus) - Michael Gungor

I love this song Prodigal by Michael Gungor. The story of someone who took advantage of earthly freedom and found that it is a dead end but then comes around to find freedom in the Father. And so I threw in this chorus as a tag out of 'This is our God' and we just sang these words, "Nothing Compares to what You've done For Me" to remember we are free through what Christ has done for us and the sacrifice made.

You'll Come - Hillsong

we started this song with the bridge, staying in a moment of worship, singing, "Chains be broken, lives be healed, eyes be opened, as Christ is revealed" again breaking free, freedom in Him. And then we just praised God in singing the rest of this song, knowing that he has freed us and let me say 'He did Come' in this service.

Commitment Song:
Center - Charlie Hall

As with all commitment songs I worked with the speaker on this song, to talk to them about there message, to find a song that really would fit and cause people to reflect and receive revelation on the Word that was given to them. When we did this song in one of the services people immediately stood up and started worshipping without any invitation to or anything, it was powerful.

Created to Worship Letter.

This week I received a letter from someone in our church who heard my message on being "Created to Worship." She is originally from Guatemala, and in this she describes the understanding that her church there had of Praising and Worshipping God. I don't know but to me it sounds a lot like heaven. Read this letter I received from her, and maybe it will encourage you like it has encouraged me to worship God uninhibitedly.

Dear Jordan,

I have being trying to write you since the Sunday you preached, but I couldn’t get your email until last service and then lack of time. First of all forgive my English and spelling because I speak Spanish so I will try to make it clear. ;o)

I just wanted to tell you how blessed I was when I heard you preaching about praising and worshiping God.

I would like to share a little with you about me. I have been in Sarasota for almost 7 years.
It was hard for me to find here a church where you can let the Spirit of God move during the praise & worship.

Back home where I am (Guatemala) there is a big movement from the Spirit and a lot of churches, or must of them give enough time to God to move and touch people hearts, so it’s being hard for me to find a church, to prepare peoples harts for enter in to His presence and many come with burdens and they need to be set free.

I used to be in a praise & worship ministry, and we used to go to minister to different places and churches in all the country, it was the best experience I ever had, there were times when we didn’t need to preach, because God was moving so powerful that there was no need for that, he was healing hearts and bodies through worship! As you know when we enter in His presence you don’t want to get out of there, you just feel like dancing, jumping, praising, bow before Him. And I really ask the Lord that He can do the same thing in our church a great revival.

A lot of times we had to teach people how to do it, because they came from the out side, (the world) and they didn’t have any idea of what was going on, we had to taught them scripture that God tells us to do it, and how king David even though he was a king he was dancing and doing crazy things for the Lord, why we can’t do to it? Are we better than him? If we can go to a stadium to cheer our favorite team, why we can’t do it for our Savior, for our King the one who gave His life for us? So I think it’s up to us to teach them how to come to His presence, specially when we are in charge of the worship, it’s our responsibility to bring them into His presence, we have to teach them to clap their hands, to raise their voices ,to lift their hands, to dance, to shout, what ever it is!

We also started in my old church to teach them that God wanted us to have a party for Him, and dance and everything else (because they were not getting the message), so we decided to not put all the chairs in the church for service, we put some on the sides so if some one got tired they could sat. We started to have every Friday night a party for Him, and that started to bring freedom to people, let me tell you we had some parties!!!!!!!!! It changed a lot of the way of people thinking about the worship, some of them they don’t think that it is important, is like every other Sunday, sing, listen the word and goodbye! But God wants more for us. Don’t you think so? I could go on and tell you more but that’s not what I want.

But what I want to tell you it’s that I am so happy to see you leading the worship the way you do, I believe God it’s going to do something greater in our church. Keep doing the great job! Keep teaching the people how to praise Him even though we come to the service with burdens in our hearts, God will do the rest.
I think I miss a lot being in the worship ministry, I don’t have a great voice, I can sing but I don’t have a voice that you would say, wow, ha! But I have a heart to worship Him, that’s my only dream to praise Him forever! So I will be praying for you, that God will use you more and more everyday, and that you can be His instrument to teach people how to praise Him.

Thanks for making some time to read this letter.
God bless you always!

Share your thoughts on this and worship in general. I look forward to hearing what you grabbed from this letter.

Grace on Earth Series - Made to Worship Message

Here is my message from Bayside's Grace on Earth Series:

Kodak's Zi6 or FLIP's new ULTRA HD?

So I want one of these trendy, hip, cool, little digital video cameras. I've used the FLIP which I love but the Kodak, my brother in law Brad, raves about the Kodak so I trust him and so I may be purchasing one of these very soon. I love how easy it is to upload to the web, and the quality...wow. So here is the breakdown:
- Both have HD (720p)
- Both are about the same size but the kodak's screen is bigger
- Both take AA batteries as well as a recharable
- Both have a usb hook up to upload videos instantly
- The Kodak however you can record on SD cards as well as there built in hard drive
- The FLIP has an HDMI hook up.
- FLIP cost = $199 Kodak cost = $159

If anyone has any thoughts let me know.

Blackberry App Store

Look I know that iphone is the greatest thing in the world but I have Verizon service, which does not allow for me to have an iphone. So I found something that will keep me going for a bit longer from being jealous of all of you who have an iphone.

Front Line Leadership

Mark 10:35-45(NKJV)
Do You have a Vision For Greatness?

If your in the minsitry cause you need a job... Quit!

¤ 3 test leaders must pass to be the leader God has called us to be...

1.) You better understand PAIN?
"Can you drink the cup, that I drink from?"

There is a price to pay to advance the kingdom of God, and cause of His ministry.

2 types of pain: 1.) Things happen to you. 2.) Have to make a hard decision: will you embrace the pain of tough decisions?

3 phases of planting a church:
1.) The pioneering phase - a promise from God. Its in pioneering that you learn to pay the price.
2.) The Josuha stage - from pioneering to possessing.
3.) The Provailing stage - end of joshuas life

2.) The Test of Submission
a.) When you don't agree with a leadership position.

3.) The Test of Identity
Do you see yourself like your entitled to something?

When ever you find striff usually self promotion is involved at the root.

Do you view yourself as leader who serves or do you say,
I view myself as a servant who's been given the opportunities to lead?

We are here to pay the price and get the job done!

We are blogging and twittering but are we praying and fasting?

In all the test its the joy of the Lord that gives us strength.
